Why should you visit Sintra

  • 1History

Sintra is rich in History. In the Sintra region, there are records of human presence since the bronze age, without forgetting periods such as the Roman era and the Muslim occupation. Later, kings and members of the court lived here, in addition to it always being a very popular place for artists who found all the inspiration they needed in the beauty and tranquility of Sintra.

  • 2 Castles and palaces

The monuments constitute one of the landmarks of Sintra. If you don't have much time available to explore the village of Sintra, it's a must to visit the Palácio Nacional de Sintra, a work that dates back to Moorish times.
The chimneys in its kitchens are emblematic, rising to an incredible 33 meters in height. As for the interior, you can count on all the beauty, richness and luxury that defines a palace. Impressive is, for example, the Coat of Arms room, with tiles from floor to ceiling.
Nearby is Quinta da Regaleira, built in the first decades of the 20th century by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro. A work full of surprises and mysticism, it has an Initiatory Well (an incredible 30 meters deep), the Carvalho Monteiro palace/residence and the wonderful gardens where you can and should stroll.
Finally, it is impossible not to go to the Palácio da Pena, which is located at the top of the Sintra mountain range. The Palace is built on a rock, emerging from the surrounding nature, absolutely powerful and admirable. A “living” example of Portuguese romanticism architecture from the 19th century. Its Manueline and Moorish influences are evident, both inside and outside. The palace itself is connected on foot to another attraction: the Castelo dos Mouros, which you can access via a path full of nature. In this castle, you will find a fort that dates back to the 10th century, that is, it dates back to the period of the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. Walk along the “round paths” around the castle and enjoy the magnificent views over the town, the Paço de Sintra, the Palácio da Pena and the immense Atlantic Ocean.

  • 3 Sweets

Sintra is also known for its delicacies, namely its sweets. A must-see is Casa Piriquita, right in the center of the town, a pastry shop with over 150 years old, where the traditional piriquita pillows are made, prepared with crispy and sweet puff pastry made from almonds and eggs (an absolute delicious!).
Cruz Alta pastries are also popular and are a tribute to the highest point of the Sintrense mountains, not to mention the traditional queijada of Sintra. You should definitely visit Sintra

  • 4 Streets

The streets of the historic center of Sintra are incredible and walking through them is an excellent afternoon plan. The local architecture is graceful and admirable and there are many restaurants and cafes that will make you stop. There is also a lot of street commerce, such as craft shops, wine, souvenirs and even ginginha! Even if you visit the town of Sintra in the middle of summer, fog and mist are characteristic of the mountains, so a coat or scarf can always be useful.

  • 5 Calm, green landscape

In addition to all the vegetation already mentioned, Sintra also has the Parque da Liberdade, which is located on a hillside and has many trails to follow. All routes have ups and downs that cross magnificent forests, where the flora includes hundreds of trees, of dozens of different species.
Along the way, there is also a waterfall with water coming from the mountains, works of art and a small playground. Needless to say, this is a great area for a picnic.
