    The Old Cathedral of Coimbra is one of the most important romantic-style buildings in Portugal. Construction of the Cathedral began around 1146, after Afonso Henriques declared himself king of Portugal and chose Coimbra as the capital of the kingdom. In 1182, the works were advanced enough for Bishop Bernudos to be buried in the Cathedral. D.Sancho, the second king of Portugal, was crowned there.
